Folklore made real in Castalia

After her mother’s death, twelve-year-old Florence Andrews is swept from a cemetery into Castalia, a dimension where the folklore she knows from books exists in reality. Taken in by Melvin Darke, a monstrous showman who manages the Marigold Theater, Florence encounters a place that first offers a strange refuge and then reveals a threat stalking its streets. The setup joins a young protagonist’s grief and isolation with dark-fantasy elements, centering the story on a transition from loss into an unfamiliar, perilous world.

Book overview

12-year-old Florence Andrews has always felt alone-even before her mother's tragic death. On the one-year anniversary of her mother's death, a mysterious lightning storm rattles the gates of Sacred Souls Cemetery and sucks Florence into another dimension called Castalia.

When Florence wakes in this new and unfamiliar world, she is taken in by a monstrous showman named Melvin Darke, the manager of a magical place called The Marigold Theater. She quickly learns that in Castalia, all the folklore from her books is very real.

Not all is as it seems; the streets of Castalia are being stalked by a dreadful monster, and in an instant, Florence's magical escape becomes a nightmare.

The clock is ticking, the pendulum is swinging, and the show is just about to begin.
