A family business reaches a turning point

A sequel to *Lovingly Restored*, Ray Hobbs’s novel shifts attention from piano restoration to the people whose futures are bound up with the business. As Russell and Natalka consider retirement, Gemma’s prospects become a family concern. Daniel offers her work in his wind-instrument repair business, where her dedication is clear, while her controlling father stands in the way of her seeking therapy and greater independence. The story brings together work, family loyalty, disability, and the struggle for autonomy, with Daniel’s efforts to help Gemma forming its central conflict.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in family-centered fiction about work and changing circumstances.
  • Readers drawn to stories addressing disability, controlling family relationships, and personal independence.

Book overview

In this sequel to Lovingly Restored, Russell and Natalka are faced with the unpleasant fact that their piano restoration business is no longer financially viable. The obvious course is to sell up and retire, but one concern remains, and that is the future of Russell's assistant Gemma, whose speech impediment excludes her from most forms of employment.

Their son Daniel offers her a post in his wind instrument repair business and finds that she is a dedicated worker. He also encounters the other impediment in Gemma's life, in the form of her blinkered, controlling father.

With the wholehearted support of his family never in question, however, Daniel proves himself worthy of the Tompkinson name in his bid to secure for her the therapy and freedom her father has denied her.
