Poems about meeting the unfamiliar

In this speculative poetry collection, imagined encounters with exoplanetarians and supernatural beings open onto questions of how humans regard the unfamiliar. The poems consider respect across species, the limits of human exceptionalism, and the social and spiritual changes the author sees as necessary for engaging with life beyond Earth. Four sections—“Exoplanet Soiree,” “Supernatural Social Club,” “Humanitas Transcendens,” and “Cosmic Jests”—organize explorations of realms beyond ordinary understanding. The described tonal range runs from somber and frightening to funny, framing cosmic speculation alongside reflections on human behavior.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in speculative poetry and imagined forms of life beyond Earth.
  • Readers drawn to poems exploring interspecies respect, human exceptionalism, and social change.
  • Readers who welcome a collection spanning somber, comic, and frightening subject matter.

Book overview

Lounging with Strange is a poetry collection about recognizing how bizarre the denizens of the universe could be and kicking back with those folks, not treating them as either monsters or saviors. Sometimes we might hang out, other times we might have to keep our distance. It's about mutual respect. As a species steeped in speciest rhetoric and intraspecies hatred, these poems are also about how much humans need to evolve spiritually and socially before we can wrap our heads and hearts around exoplanetarians. I don't think we're the pinnacle of evolution, no matter how many fairy tales we tell ourselves, and that will be a hard pill to swallow.

The tone of this work ranges from somber to funny to frightening, just like life. Divided into Exoplanet Soiree, Supernatural Social Club, Humanitas Transcendens, and Cosmic Jests, the poems explore the imagined realms beyond our understanding, but maybe, just maybe, we'll catch a glimpse behind the curtain.
