A decision between floors
In *Long Way Down*, a fifteen-year-old rides an elevator with a gun after his brother’s murder, intent on revenge. Each floor brings someone connected to his brother and adds complications to the story Will believes he understands. The elevator’s brief descent gives the novel a tightly bounded frame for examining the rules of retaliation—no crying, no snitching, revenge—and the consequences that can pass from one person to another. Jason Reynolds tells the story in short narrative verse, with the central question hanging over Will’s journey: whether he will step out of the elevator and act.
