AlbakiReads Editorial

A compact reference for celestial navigation

Geoffrey Kolbe’s almanac brings together Sun and selected-star data for 2000–2050 with concise sight-reduction and altitude-correction tables. Work forms are included to organize the calculation process. The description notes that obtaining GHA and declination involves a few additional steps compared with a conventional almanac lookup, trading some lookup convenience for a single-volume reference. Its contents are specifically oriented toward celestial navigation rather than general nautical reference use.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Navigators working with celestial-navigation methods
  • Readers seeking Sun and selected-star almanac data through 2050
  • Those who want sight-reduction tables and work forms in one volume

Book overview

Nautical almanac data for the sun and selected stars valid until 2050, plus easy to use, concise sight reduction (same tables used in the US-UK Annual Nautical Almanac) and altitude correction tables. Plus work forms to make the process even easier. A concise one-book solution for celestial navigation. It takes a few extra steps to get GHA and dec with the Long Term Almanac, since it does it without the usual 10 pounds of reference books, but with practice it takes just a few minutes longer than normal almanac look up.
