A photographic portrait of the lobster-fishing community
David Middleton’s photography turns toward the working world surrounding lobster fishing, from boats and docks to the social spaces connected with the trade. The book centers the men and women whose labor brings lobsters in from the sea, presenting lobstering as both an occupation and a deeply independent way of life. With its emphasis on people, workplaces, and the culture around the catch, this is a focused visual record of a coastal livelihood rather than a general guide to fishing.

The Lobstering Life puts readers in the boats, on the docks, in the bars, and in the lives of the men and women who pull "bugs" from the sea to sustain a cussedly independent, much admired way of life. Not since Peter Matthiessen's bestselling Men's Lives has this trade been so vibrantly brought to life.
