A Puerto Rican retelling of a familiar fairy tale

Hannah Eliot’s adaptation places the Little Mermaid story in Puerto Rico, giving the familiar underwater tale a distinct cultural setting. The mermaid’s curiosity about the world above the ocean leads to a visit, a prince, and a bargain with a sea witch: a potion can make her human, but the spell depends on the prince’s love. The book is part of the Once Upon a World series, which presents well-known fairy tales through multicultural retellings. Illustrations are by Nivea Ortiz.
