Poems in a demo-like spirit

Christian C. Welch brings together poems and other pieces at different stages of finish, from refined work to rough drafts and material still in progress. The collection frames that unevenness as part of its approach: an effort to keep making work despite the risk of failure, while putting long-performed poems into print. Its comparison to a DIY music demo suggests an assembled body of work that preserves variation and process rather than presenting every piece as fully polished. The book also draws on the overlap between page and performance, including poems that have been regular parts of live sets.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in spoken-word poetry and performance pieces.
  • Readers curious about work presented in a deliberately varied, partly unfinished form.
  • Readers with an interest in DIY music culture and creative process.

Book overview

A collection of disparate works, less about trying to produce something heavily polished, and more about trying to be willing to fall on one's face again. These are poems(and other things) taken, varying from old to not even all the way finished, some very refined pieces, and some very rough-edged attempts at processing my life and things very unsure of. If you are someone accustomed to the DIY music world, the hope was to create something almost more like a demo, while also finally putting into print poems that have long been considered mainstays for live sets/performances.
