A dystopian future where one dog becomes the key to survival

Set in 2086, this young adult alternative-history novel imagines a society shaped by widespread human sterility, where dogs have taken the place of children in family life. After a lethal agent wipes out nearly all dogs, Abby is left as the last known canine and becomes a prized state possession. Her confinement in a cloning facility brings her into contact with Rex, an advanced dog-bot, before she sets out to escape and find her human family. Abby’s journey connects questions of technological control and animal survival with the bond between pets and people, against the backdrop of an authoritarian world and a threatened canine future.

Book overview

The Last Dog by D.E. Greenfield (Dawn Greenfield Ireland) is the WINNER OF THE BOOK EXCELLENCE AWARD - READERS' FAVORITE 5-STAR WINNER

A World of Silent Cradles. By 2086, the New World Order (NWO) has achieved a stable, controlled society, but at a staggering biological cost. Decades of toxic birth control have caused a global sterility crisis, making human children a rarity. In this new reality, dogs have been elevated to the role of children, becoming the most cherished members of the family. Bill Maxwell, a brilliant inventor, and his wife Teresa, live a quiet life with their beloved Bull Terrier Lilith and her new puppies.

The Great Die-Off. The world's canine population-and any human caught unprotected-is suddenly decimated when a lethal experimental agent accidentally leaks from two global research laboratories. Anyone outdoors, including recreational glider pilots in the skies, drops dead within minutes. Lilith and the rest of her newborn litter were killed instantly. Amidst this global horror, Abby miraculously survives, becoming the last known living canine on Earth. Instantly classified as priceless state property, she is confiscated by the Tranquility Force-the government's oppressive global police-and locked inside a high-security cloning facility. There, she is overseen by Dr. Roberts, a cold scientist who views her strictly as a biological specimen and refuses to believe she possesses the advanced intelligence Bill's technology has unlocked.

Friendship in the Glass House. While imprisoned in a glass house, Abby finds comfort in an unlikely friendship with Rex, a highly advanced "dog-bot." Although designed by the government to patrol and enforce order, Rex begins to develop a sense of sentience through his interactions with Abby. He becomes her best friend and confidant in the lab, providing her with the emotional support she needs to keep her spirit alive while Dr. Roberts subjects her to rigorous testing.

The Great Escape. When Rex and the dog-bots are delivered to Tranquility Force leaving Abby without her friend, she develops a plan. Driven by a fierce determination to return to her family, Abby stages a daring solo escape from the facility, outsmarting the high-tech security systems. As she navigates the dangerous wilderness and hiding from drones searching for her, she undergoes a profound transformation from a domestic pet to a survivor. During her journey, she encounters a wild Wolf, the last of his kind. The two form an immediate, powerful bond, and he becomes her mate, symbolizing a bridge between the domestic past and a new, wild future.

A New Beginning. Bill and Teresa risk everything to track down their "dog-daughter," they must evade the Tranquility Force and the reaching grasp of the NWO. The story culminates in a high stakes escape to the forbidden outlaw district of Texmexzona (TMZ). Abby, now a mother to a new generation that represents the survival of her kind, must travel to TMZ to reunite with her human parents.
