A Las Vegas horror novel with a notable screen history

Jeff Rice’s novel centers on a blood-sucking killer loose in Las Vegas, bringing supernatural horror into a city setting and a manhunt framework. Its publication history is closely tied to the 1972 TV movie The Night Stalker and the screen character Kolchak. This restored edition adds contextual material alongside the novel: a foreword, an afterword, a profile of Rice, and illustrations. Those additions place the story within the history of a work that moved from an unpublished novel into a film and television series.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in occult and supernatural horror set in Las Vegas.
  • Those exploring the origins of The Night Stalker and its television adaptations.
  • Readers who value editions with supplementary essays, a biographical profile, and illustrations.

Book overview

This is the story behind the greatest manhunt in the history of Las Vegas...

In 1972, The Night Stalker took America by storm, becoming the highest-rated TV movie at the time and spawning a second movie and a cult series, all starring Darren McGavin. The story of a blood-sucking psycho on the loose in Sin City started with a then-unpublished novel by Las Vegas reporter Jeff Rice.

Now, after years of being out of print, Monstrous Books presents this restored version of the book that launched one of the beloved and influential characters in TV history. The book also features a foreword by David Dastmalchian (Late Night With the Devil, Count Crowley), an afterword by Rodney Barnes (Killadelphia), a profile on Jeff Rice by MarkDawidziak (The Kolchak Companion), and illustrations by Russ Braun (The Boys). The Kolchak: The Night Stalker audiobook is narrated by William Katt (Greatest American Hero, Carrie, Perry Mason).
