A citywide search for the Knock-Knock Rapist

Set in New York City beginning in 2000, this true-crime account centers on the hunt for a serial rapist who gained access to homes while posing as a maintenance worker. The case brings together detectives from the NYPD’s Special Victims Squad in a citywide task force. Told in the lead detective’s words, the book follows the investigation across several years, including repeated near-captures and the suspect’s attempts to evade police. Its defining thread is the effort to track a predator whose method depended on being admitted through the door.

Book overview

In the fall of 2000, a veteran NYPD detective with a record of always catching the bad guy is tasked with tracking a serial rapist. But this is no ordinary criminal. This guy seems to be uncatchable, and something has to give.

Knock-Knock is the true story of the intense search for a ruthless rapist posing as a maintenance worker before invading the homes of his innocent victims. He terrorizes a community of young women, many of whom are in their early teens. No one in New York City is safe, as these attacks and sexual assaults continue for the better part of a decade.

The detectives of the elite Special Victims Squad form a citywide task force and dig deep in their arsenal to draw him out. Due to the fact that he poses as a plumber and knocks on the doors of his prey, the press calls him the Knock-Knock Rapist. The detectives in the task force refer to him as Citywide 6, the case number assigned.

This story is told in the words of the lead detective, who vows to find this monster and bring him to justice, a task that will seem impossible at times, as this suspect is cunning, street-smart, brazen, and at times, very lucky. He narrowly escapes capture on three separate occasions, taunting the detectives along the way.

Obsessed with his capture, the lead detective will take you along on a roller-coaster ride as he tracks down the most elusive rapist he has ever encountered.
