Book overview
A rigorous yet accessible examination of the biblical evidence surrounding the baptism of the Holy Spirit, from the former minister of Westminster Chapel
"A magisterial and challenging recall to the inner realities of true Christian experience."--J.I. Packer
In Joy Unspeakable, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones delivers a searching, Scripture-saturated call to the church to seek the fullness of the Holy Spirit with renewed seriousness and expectancy. Moving carefully through Acts and the Epistles, he argues that the New Testament pattern reveals not a one-time attainment of spiritual completeness, but repeated seasons of divine refreshing--fresh outpourings of the Spirit granted to hungry, praying believers. With pastoral warmth and theological precision, Lloyd-Jones challenges both complacency and spiritual pride, insisting that lifelong sanctification is the Spirit's ongoing work and that no Christian "gets it all" at once.
Rooted in the proclamation of John the Baptist that Christ would baptize with the Holy Spirit, Lloyd-Jones contends that the church's most urgent need is revival--an experiential, empowering encounter with God that produces assurance, purity, and boldness.
An important resource for all Christians, Joy Unspeakable includes:
- compelling biblical theology of the baptism and fullness of the Holy Spirit grounded in Acts and the Epistles
- a corrective to both perfectionism and passive Christianity, emphasizing lifelong sanctification
- rich historical illustrations of revival and spiritual awakening across the centuries
- twenty-four substantial sermons that combine doctrinal depth with clerical urgency
Drawing on church history and pastoral ministry, this enduring classic remains essential reading for those who long to examine the biblical case carefully--and to pray for a deeper walk with the Lord by His Spirit.
