Reflection and preparation in the OCIA journey

Designed for the Enlightenment period of adult Catholic initiation, this participant resource brings together reflection on God’s mercy and forgiveness with an introduction to the scrutinies and the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Activities include discussion questions, private journaling, and a group Lenten retreat, giving the period both individual and shared elements. The book frames this stage as preparation for the sacraments and a time for participants to reflect on their lives and faith before full initiation into the Church. It is part of Liguori Publications’ broader Journey of Faith program and can be supplemented with lesson-linked Catholic Update references.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Adults preparing for Catholic initiation through OCIA

Book overview

Journey of Faith for Adults welcomes adults of all ages and backgrounds to the Catholic faith and meets them where they are in their own faith journey, using an engaging pastoral style. Based on the ever-popular and long-running Christian initiation program from Liguori Publications, Journey of Faith and Jornada de Fe (previously, Camino de Fe) addresses relevant life issues, faith topics, and questions in a catechetical approach to OCIA.

Now with a new, more modern design, Journey of Faith combines discussion questions, private journaling, and other activities to appeal to a variety of learners and offer a program that's flexible enough for you to modify to your particular needs. For parishes that enjoy Liguori's Catholic Update newsletter, lesson-by-lesson references allow you to easily supplement any topics with timely and enlightening articles.

Journey of Faith for Adults, Enlightenment guides participants through a period of self-reflection and preparation for the sacraments in a way that's relevant to where they are in their own lives. They will learn about God's mercy and forgiveness, through an introduction to the scrutinies, and be encouraged to participate in the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. There is also a group Lenten retreat, an opportunity for them to spend some quiet time with themselves and God before becoming fully initiated into the Church.

The related comprehensive Leader Guide gives you everything you need to walk into your OCIA class and start leading--whether you're a veteran OCIA instructor or a first-time volunteer. Additional discussion points prepare you for their responses and keep the conversation going. The contemporary wraparound design enables you to see what your participants see so you can spend more time teaching and growing in faith alongside your group.

The process by which adults are initiated into the Catholic faith throughout the United States is now called the OCIA--the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults. "Order" is a clearer translation of the Latin term for the process formerly known as the RCIA--the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. People preparing for baptism and reception into the Church celebrate several rites as part of the order to which those rites belong--an order whose mission is to journey in the faith. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops adopted the name change in 2021, with American dioceses introducing the name thereafter. For more information, please contact your local diocese.
