Poems for seeing the bigger picture
This anthology brings poetry to questions of perspective: how a single negative comment, an embarrassing moment, or a problem that feels endless can crowd out the wider view. Its framing invites middle school readers to consider how poems might help shift attention and make room for a more balanced understanding of everyday setbacks. The collection’s subject is not perfection, but the human tendency to lose sight of the whole when one experience looms large.

Being human means to sometimes lose perspective. We focus on the one negative comment we received instead of the ten positive ones. We think we're the only person who has had something really embarrassing happen to us, or that a problem we're having will go on forever. When we've lost sight of the big picture, how can we help ourselves put things back in perspective? Poetry can lend a hand.
