A visual reference spanning prehistoric life

Dougal Dixon’s encyclopedia pairs a broad timeline of prehistoric life with a species-by-species reference section. An introductory overview addresses dinosaur evolution, adaptation, habitats and locations; the entries range from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous through the Paleogene and Neogene to the Quaternary. The coverage extends beyond dinosaurs to fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, crocodiles, turtles and birds, among other groups. Each main entry combines an illustration and a fossil-site map with information on the creature’s physical form, movement, hunting and defenses. The book’s organizing thread is the variety of prehistoric animals and the fossil evidence used to locate them.
