A 1920 argument against compulsory vaccination

This illustrated treatise, originally published in 1920 and reprinted in 2009, frames compulsory vaccination as both a medical and legal controversy. Higgins assembles what he describes as evidence and exhibits in a petition and illustrated supplement, arguing that compulsory vaccination violates individual rights and should be abolished. The book is therefore a historical primary source for examining opposition to vaccination mandates and the way that position was presented through appeals to law, medicine, and American rights. Its claims reflect the author’s argument; the description does not establish their accuracy by present-day standards.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers researching historical opposition to compulsory vaccination or vaccination mandates
  • Readers studying the intersection of medical policy, law, and individual rights
  • Readers interested in early twentieth-century American polemics and illustrated treatises

Book overview

2009 reprint of the 1920 edition. This profusely illustrated early treatise on the horrors of compulsory vaccination was first published in 1920. Higgins believed it to be a legal atrocity and a gross violation of basic American rights. He sets out to detail the "many shocking facts, proofs and exhibits which I have been collecting for years, and which, as now massed in the Petition and its Illustrated Supplement, can, I think, leave no doubt in the mind of any reasonable man or women...that compulsory vaccination should be immediately abolished, and that its continuation, with these proofs against it, would be a most gross medical blunder and malpractice and a grave violation of the basic American principle of Inherent Individual Rights..."
