The lack of genuine, flesh and blood heroes is killing an entire generation of Americans. Children need a worthy story to ponder, to embrace, and to tell others. Children taught about the heroes of the past not only take on the divine qualities of such heroes, but magnify those historic lessons, drawing strength from those victories won, relating them to their own lives, and giving them hope. Tragically today heroes are more often fictious superheroes, like Superman or Spiderman. I believe such characters are actually detrimental to individuals, to society at large, particularly to our young people--especially when they are used to replace our genuine historical figures who sacrificed so much for this nation. This is a fatal mistake. Were these American heroes and heroines perfect? Hardly, but that's not why we remember them and learn what they can teach us. For they were virtuous in their own ways. They were good and worthy of our love and admiration.
Parents please remember, you cannot idolize or promote the secular and worldly without risking your children growing up to be secular and worldly. A child watches his father's eyes, taking note, even subconsciously, of what her father idolizes and spends his time thinking about. That's a sobering thought! Once in America every classroom displayed a portrait of George Washington. And every class began with standing, in respect, to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. E Pluribus Unum, "From Many, One," all of us united as one blessed nation under God. As I was taught all my life--and history proves--such things are not optional to our survival, let alone liberty, peace, and prosperity. Children (of all ages) need heroes. As we've chronicled in this HEROES FOR FREEDOM series, America's Heroes and Heroines embody the true American Spirit, a uniquely Divine character, a gift and a roadmap we must cherish and master, and never allow diminished, cancelled, or stolen from us. I'm Rick Robison and this is HEROES FOR FREEDOM!
