Stories of loss, change, and finding a place

This collection brings together women facing the aftermath of separation, bereavement, and difficult circumstances. Its stories range across abandonment, motherhood, illness, death, and love affairs. In the title story, a young woman finds her birth mother as the older woman nears death; elsewhere, a protagonist considers beginning life again, and another searches for her late mother’s family. “Cake” turns on a woman taking action for her emotional freedom. Together, the pieces connect intimate family relationships with questions of independence and renewal. The collection also includes artwork by the author’s daughter, Jennifer.

Book overview

This short story collection has a common thread of women finding their place in this world after leaving or losing a loved one. They are simple stories with topics including abandonment, motherhood, and love affairs amid sickness, death, and sometimes just the circumstances of life. In the title story, "Grace Untethered" a young woman discovers a long-lost birth mother who is on the brink of death herself. In "Absence," a subtle and unknown desire to begin life again surfaces for the protagonist. In "Bangkok," a woman searches for the family of her recently deceased mother, and in "Cake" (nominated for best online short story of the year), a woman decides to take things into her own hands for the sake of her emotional freedom. I hope you enjoy the stories and find a common thread to some of them in your own life. And all of the artwork is by my daughter, Jennifer. She is quite the artist in her own way. Enjoy!
