A steampunk voyage toward war’s end

The final installment of Scott Westerfeld’s steampunk trilogy brings Alek and Deryn’s round-the-world journey toward its closing stretch. Their goals include ending World War I and restoring Alek’s claim to Austria’s throne, while their ship, the Leviathan, keeps taking them away from the conflict’s center. Deryn’s disguise as a boy in the British Air Service complicates her relationship with Alek, who does not know she is a girl; their countries are also enemies. As the Leviathan heads for New York City with a dangerous passenger aboard, the description signals a convergence of concealed identities, returning characters, and political stakes.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Teens and young adults interested in steampunk fiction.
  • Readers following the earlier books in Westerfeld’s trilogy.
  • Readers interested in alternate-history adventure involving World War I and a transatlantic voyage.

Book overview

Alek and Deryn are on the last leg of their round-the-world quest to end World War I, reclaim Alek's throne as prince of Austria, and finally fall in love. The first two objectives are complicated by the fact that their ship, the Leviathan, continues to detour farther away from the heart of the war (and crown). And the love thing would be a lot easier if Alek knew Deryn was a girl. (She has to pose as a boy in order to serve in the British Air Service.) And if they weren't technically enemies.

The tension thickens as the Leviathan steams toward New York City with a homicidal lunatic on board: secrets suddenly unravel, characters reappear, and nothing is at it seems in this thunderous conclusion to Scott Westerfeld's brilliant trilogy.
