Growing into a hero without leaving yourself behind

In this follow-up to *Go-Man: Champion of Earth*, Tobi is more at ease as Go-Man, but his dream of joining the Robugs at Robug Academy brings new questions about belonging and loyalty. As his friend Grace wrestles with her own identity, Tobi must weigh the expectations of his heroes against what feels right to him. The superhero adventure pairs giant-monster action with concerns closer to home: friendship, feeling different from classmates, and the effects of neglect. The description also identifies Tobi as autistic, placing his experiences within the story’s larger questions of identity and connection.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Middle-grade readers interested in superhero comics and giant-monster adventures.
  • Readers looking for stories about friendship, identity, and feeling different.

Book overview

Lonely latchkey kid Tobi dreams of growing up to fight the giant monsters that plague his city, just like his dad, but when he stumbles upon the power to turn into the colossal superhero, Go-Man, he realizes he's been wishing his childhood away.

Go-Man vs. The Star Dragon is an action-packed, highly bingeable middle grade adventure about how one kid overcomes the differences that set him apart from his classmates in order to make friends and save his city. It's also, at its heart, a story about an autistic kid overcoming neglect in his home. It draws on Hamish's own childhood experiences and obsessions, making this project very close to his heart.

This follow-up to Go-Man: Champion of Earth finds Tobi getting more comfortable with his superhero persona, but his best (and only) friend Grace is struggling with her own identity and how it fits into Tobi's larger-than-life adventures. When Tobi is invited to Robug Academy, his dream, he also struggles with how to find a place among his favorite heroes, the Robugs, how to stay true to himself and his friend, and how to do the right thing when everyone is telling him it's wrong.

Who are the real villains here? And is Tobi in danger of becoming one of them?
