Learning through the incarceration experience
Gifts from the Dark examines incarceration through two connected concerns: the systemic injustices and disparities of mass incarceration, and the possibility that prison experience can also involve transformational learning. Joni Schwartz challenges a solely deficit-based view without minimizing the harms of the system. That framing makes the book’s subject not only sentencing and incarceration, but also how learning and change might be understood within an unjust institution.

Without minimizing the systemic injustices and disparities of mass incarceration, Gifts from the Dark challenges the mindset of incarceration as a solely one dimensional, deficit event. Instead, this book argues that the prison experience can potentially be one of transformational learning.
