AlbakiReads Editorial

A woman athlete navigating 1920s expectations

Set in rural Missouri, the book centers on Jeroldine Heifner, a 20-year-old high school senior and captain of Farmington High School’s county-champion women’s basketball team. Her experience brings together the challenges facing female athletes in the 1920s and the limited choices available to women, with basketball’s principle of “getting and holding position” serving as a thread through her life on and off the court. The account also addresses the family judgment and silencing Jeroldine faced, placing her personal story within broader questions about women’s roles and social expectations.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in women’s history and changing social roles.
  • Readers drawn to stories about women athletes and high school basketball.
  • Readers interested in family judgment and personal choices in a historical setting.

Book overview

In 1925, in a small town in rural Missouri, Jeroldine Heifner was the captain of the Women's Basketball Team at Farmington High School. The team was

County champions that year, but the story of how Jeroldine got to be team captain as a 20-year-old high school senior, the challenges the team faced, the hardships of being a female athlete in 1926 and the choices open to women all came to bear on

Jeroldine.

The basketball principal of "To Get and Hold Position" defined Jeroldine's life, both on and off the court, guiding her into adulthood, helping her navigate tough decisions, and leading her to question women's roles in 1920's society.

Remembered as the 'Scandal of the Family", Jeroldine was judged, shunned, diminished and silenced throughout her lifetime. This is Jeroldine's story, but it

really isn't very different from many of our stories.
