A family confrontation leaves Satoko facing its aftermath

Set in the Meiji era, the series pairs Satoko’s effort to secure a beneficial marriage with the danger posed by Shinpei, an assassin who has become her unwanted fiancé. In this volume, her father’s arrival on Goddess Island sparks an armed confrontation: Shinpei is shot, others are wounded or killed, and Satoko is left bedridden after the trauma. The description points to a shift from immediate danger toward recovery, as an unexpected person offers her help. Family loyalty, survival, and the consequences of violence shape this installment’s central tensions.

Book overview

Satoko dreams of marrying a noble but can't escape the assassin who has her within his sights.

Afflicted with a heart condition, Meiji-era noblewoman Satoko is determined to secure a marriage that will benefit her family before she dies. But before she can realize her goal, she's targeted by a mysterious assassin named Shinpei. In a last-ditch effort to save her life, Satoko asks her would-be murderer to marry her. Her proposal isn't sincere, but unfortunately for her, Shinpei loves as intensely as he kills. Can Satoko find a way to break the engagement without losing her life?

When Satoko's father appears on Goddess Island, the Kirigaya family soldiers raise their guns one by one against Shinpei, shooting him right before Satoko's eyes. Mitsueda is also shot, and countless others are wounded or killed. With her heart left deeply scarred, Satoko remains confined to her bed, unable to recover from the trauma--that is, until an unexpected person reaches out with a helping hand.
