Fiona’s Zoo Community and Its Conservation Message

Fiona’s early care at the Cincinnati Zoo provides the book’s starting point: born prematurely and unable to stand or nurse, she received support from caregivers and veterinary staff. Her growth into a healthy hippo connects her story with the zoo’s other animal ambassadors, including species the description identifies as critically endangered, such as black rhinos and Malayan tigers. The account links encounters with zoo animals to a broader message about human care and conservation, emphasizing that protecting vulnerable species depends on people wanting to save them.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Families introducing very young children to animals and zoo settings
  • Young readers interested in hippos and other zoo animals
  • Adults looking for a simple introduction to endangered species and conservation

Book overview

Fiona, was born six weeks before her due date on January 24, 2017. She was too small and weak to stand and nurse from her mother, Bibi, so caregivers and vet staff stepped in to provide critical care. With help from #TeamFiona, the premature hippo grew into a healthy hippo and an amazing ambassador for her species. Fiona's Cincinnati Zoo friends are also ambassadors. Some of the species represented in this book, like black rhinos and Malayan tigers, are critically endangered. There is hope for them, but people must care enough to want to save them. Seeing amazing creatures like these at a zoo can inspire that kind of powerful connection and make our planet a better place.
