Awards & Recognition

Critical praise
Praise from Publishers Weekly
Publishers Weekly praises the book’s humor and celebration of individuality.

Elmer

Elmer’s patchwork coloring sets him apart from the other elephants, whose laughter leads him to wonder whether blending in would feel better. The premise turns a simple question of appearance and belonging into a fable about individuality, with laughter also part of the book’s central idea. Its elephant cast and clear focus give the story a child-friendly way to open conversations about difference and how people respond to it.

Book overview

"McKee's gentle humor and love of irony are in full force in this celebration of individuality and laughter." --Publishers Weekly

Elmer the elephant is bright-colored patchwork all over. No wonder the other elephants laugh at him!

If he were ordinary elephant color, the others might stop laughing. That would make Elmer feel better, wouldn't it? David McKee's comical fable about everyone's favorite patchwork elephant teaches readers to be themselves and celebrates the power of laughter.
