Documenting a ten-day mobile-gallery project in Santa Fe, this volume gathers portraits of 566 people who encountered Axle Contemporary’s traveling studio across 11 city locations. The project made photography visible and participatory: portraits were given to sitters, displayed on the gallery’s exterior, and later included in a projection at SITE Santa Fe. Alongside the individual images, the book records the final composite that combines every participant into a single communal picture. Essays on the project add context to the photographic record and its public-art process.

In March, 2012, Axle Contemporary produced a 10-day project in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We rigged our mobile gallery as a portrait studio, and photographed all who stopped by in 11 locations around the city over the course of 10 days. Photos were distributed free on-site, pasted to the side of the mobile gallery, and projected in an exhibition at SITE Santa Fe. All the photos were composited at the end of the project, creating one image that represents all 566 participants. All the photos as well as essays about the project are collected here in this book.
