Classroom remarks, collected over years of teaching

Kory Mikesell gathers students’ off-the-cuff sayings from years of teaching, drawing mainly on comments made in sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade classes. The title signals the collection’s comic premise: remarks that emerge when students speak before fully thinking through what they are saying. Framed around a classroom sign urging students to engage their brains before speaking, the book turns these remembered moments into a compilation rooted in school life and the unpredictability of student conversation.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Adults interested in humor about school and classroom life.
  • Teachers and former students who enjoy collections of student remarks.
  • Readers seeking brief, anecdotal humor based on real classroom comments.

Book overview

Did Hitler Die on a Golf Course is a compilation of the sayings of my students as they were said in my classes over the years of my teaching. I used to have a sign hung above me on the front wall so all could see. The sign read, "Be sure brain is engaged before putting mouth in gear." My students, mostly sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, decided to ignore the suggestion, and this book is a result of that decision.
