A morgue intern amid Detroit’s upheaval

Set during Detroit’s 1967 unrest and extending into 1968, the novel places Dr. Matt Drummond’s work at the city morgue alongside a city in crisis. The description points to deaths connected with racism, medical violence, gunshot wounds, illegal abortions, and neglect. When Matt is framed over an abortion-related death, the story turns toward pursuit by Detroit Homicide and assistance from the city’s underworld. The Tigers’ continued play provides a recurring detail against the turmoil. Historical events and an individual’s flight through the city form the book’s central frame.
