A mystery on a volcanic island

Katya Lonewood notices a troubling pattern on her island: fish are disappearing and birds have gone silent. As a dormant volcano erupts, the mystery of what is happening to the wildlife becomes urgent, with clues at risk of being lost in the destruction. The story brings together an ecological mystery, an island setting divided between treed and untreed lands, and Katya’s pursuit of a scholarship to her dream university. Its lead is presented as outspoken and difficult to please, a character who refuses to make herself smaller to satisfy those around her.

Book overview

Katya Lonewood isn't likable. She's the difficult daughter of a deadbeat dad. The locals on the untreed part of the island veer around her while the islanders on the treed lands tolerate her antics. Maybe it's her personality issue. Screw 'em. Why does she need to shrink herself to make other people feel bigger?

With the fish disappearing and the birds falling silent, Katya knows something is wrong. Something she's not supposed to talk about, but she can't silence the screaming in her gut. She knows that whatever is happening is only about going to get worse. When a once dormant volcano suddenly roars back to life, Katya knows she must race against the clock to discover what happened to the wildlife before all of the clues are burned to ashes. While she's not about to win a personality contest, she just might win a scholarship to her dream university along the way.
