A teenager’s fight to reclaim control

Dani Argyle’s life is shaped by overlapping pressures: a father missing for three years, a mother consumed by grief, responsibility for her deaf younger brother, and a school where her ADHD and intelligence are poorly accommodated. The ghost of her father is also her best friend. When Dani uncovers a psychic draining her mother’s finances, the conflict shifts toward confronting a con artist, while Dani must manage her emotions and place trust in a new romance. The description brings together family strain, exclusion, disability, and exploitation in a young adult story about a teenager searching for agency. A discussion guide is included for group, classroom, or individual study.

Book overview

Dani Argyle is a high school student whose best friend is a ghost the ghost of her father who has been missing for three years. Because her mother is overwhelmed with grief, Dani is left to fend for herself and her deaf younger brother.
Dani feels like she's fighting the world. Her peers do not accept her because she is overweight; her school is ill-equipped to handle an astute girl with ADHD, and the popular girls hate her for attracting the mysterious student from Japan. When everything about her life makes her feel confined and powerless, her only goal becomes dropping out of the institution that makes her feel stupid. But when Dani discovers that a psychic has been gutting her mother's finances, she finally has an adversary worth fighting . . . if only she can control her emotions long enough and trust her new romance deeply enough to out-con a con artist.

This book contains a discussion guide for small groups, classes, and individual study. This is the black and white version of the original.
