Friends on the starting line

Poppy’s drive to win the Small Rodents Competitive Cycling Championship brings her very different friend Cornbread into training. She enjoys racing gear, secret plans, and competition; he is content simply to spend time together. Their shared race gives the story a way to explore how friendship can hold room for different priorities, and how teamwork does not require two people to want exactly the same thing. The championship sets the pair a common goal, while the contrast between them keeps the focus on both partnership and individuality.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Young readers exploring early-reader fiction about friendship and teamwork.
  • Children interested in animal characters and a competitive cycling adventure.
  • Readers who enjoy stories about friends with contrasting personalities.

Poppy LOVES shiny new racing gear. Cornbread does not. Poppy ADORES top secret master plans. Cornbread does not. Poppy IS super competitive. Cornbread...is not. But Cornbread and Poppy are the best of friends, so when Poppy is determined to win the Small Rodents Competitive Cycling Championship Classic Cornbread agrees to train by her side. Cornbread has fun just spending time with his friend, but Poppy's goal is scoring the Winner's Cup. Is a finish line all these mice will discover at the end of their race?
