Essays on rural life and who tells African stories

In *Conundrums and Other Personal Essays*, M-Soga Mlandu writes from the perspective of an African child, with rural communities presented as both subject and source of belonging. The volume is described as moving between isiXhosa and English and as addressing how African lives and cultures are represented in literature. Its central concern is narrative ownership: who gets to tell these stories, and whose perspective is treated as authoritative. That framing places the collection at the intersection of personal essay, South African writing, and debate about representation.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in South African literature and African perspectives on rural life.
  • Readers exploring questions of cultural representation and narrative ownership.
  • Readers interested in personal essays and writing across isiXhosa and English.

Book overview

Soga Mlandu is a rare talent in South African letters. Having expressed himself through almost all genres and also being bilingual (swiftly moving between isiXhosa and English), he has been writing from the perspective of the African child whose constituency and sanctuary is the rural populace. So is the subject and theme of Conundrums And Other Essays, the volume I have edited. We do need to challenge the ethnographic nature of African letters where the white gazer is the appropriator of African culture and the black subject being the pathological informant. Quoting the widely circulated African idiom, 'until the lion learns how to write every story will glorify the hunter'. In simple terms this means that we must tell and own our stories, and not the other way around.
