AlbakiReads Editorial

A practical synthesis of multiple-use trail conflicts

Organized in two parts, this report brings together literature and practice on the challenges of managing trails shared by different activities. Its first section groups the discussion around three management challenges and two categories of responses, then distills general principles for avoiding or minimizing conflict. The second section turns to what remains unknown, identifying gaps in current knowledge and proposing areas for further research. The structure links practical management considerations with a broader account of where evidence is still needed.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Trail managers seeking a structured overview of shared-use trail challenges and responses.
  • Readers researching park and recreation management or multiple-use trails.
  • Those interested in research gaps related to trail conflict management.

Book overview

This report is organized into two parts. Part I presents the synthesis of literature and practice related to multiple-use trails. It is organized around the three major challenges faced by trail managers and the two categories of responses at their disposal to address these challenges. In every case the challenges and available responses cut across many trail activities and types of trails. Part I concludes with a presentation of general principles for avoiding and minimizing conflicts on multiple-use trails distilled from the information reviewed. Part II builds on the synthesis by identifying gaps in our current knowledge and suggesting research that could be undertaken to close these gaps.
