Making conversation visible

Carol Gray presents comic-strip conversations as a visual tool: simple drawings show how an exchange unfolds between two or more people. The approach gives concrete form to social cues and to less tangible aspects of conversation, while offering support for people who find rapid verbal exchanges challenging. The book focuses on using these drawings in work with students with autism, Asperger’s, and other developmental disabilities, with relevance for both family and professional settings.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Parents seeking visual approaches to support students’ communication
  • Professionals working with students with autism or other developmental disabilities

Book overview

A "comic strip conversation" is a conversation between two or more people that incorporates the use of simple drawings. These drawings illustrate the dynamics of communication, providing support to individuals who struggle with the quick exchange of information in a conversation. This book has become a staple for parents and professionals working with students with autism, Asperger's, and other developmental disabilities. The visual supports provide not only concrete social cues, but also can improve students' understanding of the more abstract components of conversation.
