A tooth fairy tale about the living world

A rogue tooth fairy from the Chlorophyll clan shares the story with spotted owls and Earth Mother, bringing together an imaginary family and a theme of connection between people and the planet. The book’s roots reach back to a tale written in the 1950s by Beth Jacobs; Suzanne Pershing updated her mother’s story and created new art to accompany drawings by her uncle, Roy DeForest. The family history behind the book is part of its framing: an old story and a collection of illustrations brought into a new edition focused on how the natural world is interconnected.

Book overview

A rogue tooth fairy from the Chlorophyll clan, spotted owls, and Earth Mother tell a story of the intimate connections we have to our planet, how things work together, and the ultimate love that makes it happen. The original tale was written by Beth Jacobs, who won a Junior Literary Guild award in 1961 for her book Look to the Mountains. Chlorophyll was illustrated by world-famous abstract artist Roy DeForest, who was Ms. Jacobs's brother. The tale was written in the 1950's and lay dormant until now, or perhaps until we were ready to accept it, when Suzanne Jacobs-Pershing took Uncle Roy's drawings to the Antique Roadshow and introduced the collection to the public for the first time in 2023. The DeForest drawings were well received. Suzanne, also an artist and writer, knew she needed to update her mom's story and make new art to go with her uncle's drawings. Chlorophyll is about how we are all connected. It is a love story about an imaginary family, created in love by a very real family.
