A search across Normandy’s fortified countryside

In this sixth volume, Luca’s squad enters the Duchy of Normandy to locate the Garland before another meteor strike. With four forts to investigate, their mission unfolds amid a territory ruled by the Doppelganger and known for its use of identical slave-soldiers. The book places the military search within the series’ larger conflict over the Spires, ancient structures holding knowledge that nations seek to control. Luca’s supernatural sensitivity to music and his wish to become a maestro remain part of the tension between his musical aspirations and his life as a mercenary. The description also signals a deeper look into Demi’s past as the squad moves through the countryside.

Luca is a bugler in a mercenary company who wants nothing more than to leave the battlefield behind and become a true musician, a maestro. Luca and his Branched squad have entered the Duchy of Normandy to hunt down and eliminate the Garland before she can call down another meteor strike. The Duchy, under the control of the Doppelganger, is also known as the Land of Thralls for its disturbing use of identical slave-soldiers. The Pontiff has narrowed the Garland's potential location to four forts, and Luca's squad must infiltrate each in turn.
