A journey through travel, access and freedom

Mike Fox’s account traces a journey from Brooklyn to Buenos Aires, with practical travel challenges woven into its larger reflections. His wife, Sylvia, has Parkinson’s disease and often uses a wheelchair, bringing questions of accessibility and the realities of travel into view. Along the route, encounters with places associated with independence—from New York and Philadelphia to Colombia and Argentina—connect the journey to the Americas’ histories of freedom and self-rule. The book brings personal travel experience together with these historical and political threads.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Travel readers interested in journeys through North and Latin America.
  • Readers seeking accounts that address wheelchair access and disability in travel.
  • Readers interested in the history of independence movements across the Americas.

We came across it when we saw the Statue of Liberty in New York and in talking to people in New York, and again in Philadelphia, with its links to the American War of Independence from the UK, where we walked in the footsteps of George Washington. In Latin America we were constantly reminded of their struggles for independence from Spain, both in Colombia and Argentina, where the two larger-than-life liberators, Simon Bolivar and Jos
