A box becomes the birthday adventure

A new toy’s packaging takes center stage as a young child turns a birthday box into a setting for imagined journeys: across an ocean, aboard a sailing ship, down a slope, and into a robot’s brief role. The toy puppy that came inside joins the play. The premise pairs familiar birthday excitement with imaginative, everyday play, making the box itself the book’s organizing idea.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Babies and toddlers, especially those in the listed 0–3 age group
  • Families seeking a birthday-themed picture book about imaginative play
  • Young children who enjoy stories featuring dogs or puppies

Book overview

"Refreshing. . . . A perfect birthday book for a toddler!" -- School Library Journal (starred review)

What's better than getting a brand-new toy as a birthday gift? Playing with the box it came in! Climb in for a flight across the ocean, a jaunt on a sailing ship, some sledding down a slippery slope, and a brief stint as a robot. Good thing the toy pup that came inside the box is happy to come along for the ride! Leslie Patricelli draws from the well of parental wit and wisdom for another adventure starring everyone's favorite baby character.
