Audubon’s bird engravings in miniature

This compact volume gathers reproductions of all 435 hand-colored engravings from John James Audubon’s *Birds of America*, first published between 1827 and 1838. The images are arranged in modern taxonomic order by ornithologist Roger Tory Peterson and scientist Virginia Marie Peterson, whose introduction also covers Audubon’s life and career. The book brings together two perspectives—artistic representation and the classification of birds—within a small-format presentation of a landmark work in American art and natural history illustration.
