Allen’s ideas recast in feminine language

This short volume presents James Allen’s ideas about the influence of thought on character and happiness in wording addressed directly to women. The source describes Dorothy Jean Hulst’s method: she revised masculine references in *As a Man Thinketh*, replacing them with feminine equivalents. The book’s distinctive feature is therefore its adaptation of Allen’s text, making its concepts available without requiring readers to mentally translate the original’s gendered language. Its central premise—that positive thought shapes character and consequent happiness—is presented as Allen’s belief.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

Book overview

Dorothy Jean Hulst, a free-lance writer, had as one of her favorite books As A Man Thinketh, by James Allen. In this short volume, Allen expressed his belief that an individual, through the power of positive thought, forms his or her character and consequent happiness.

Hulst was inspired by the content of Allen's book but tired of the mental exercise required to substitute feminine equivalents for masculine terms. Using a pencil, she crossed out all masculine references, replacing them with feminine words. The result, As A Woman Thinketh, allows women to identify directly and personally with Allen's concepts.
