A hands-on route to parametric CAD modeling

Dustin McNally’s guide centers on building product models with features and tools in CREO Parametric 10, using repeated practice to develop familiarity with the software and basic troubleshooting. Its emphasis is applied modeling rather than lengthy explanations of individual CAD functions. The stated progression aims toward an intermediate working skill level, including producing models and detail drawings for prototyping or manufacturing. The scope has clear boundaries: complex equation-driven modeling, simulations, mechanisms, and detailed geometric tolerance drawings are not covered.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Mechanical engineering students learning 3D CAD through modeling exercises
  • Beginning CREO users seeking practice with product models and detail drawings
  • Those preparing for early-career design work or internships

Book overview

3D Modeling is an important skillset for many Mechanical Engineers. Instead of lengthy explanations of how the CAD features operate, students will instead apply features and tools to build realistic product models while gaining deeper knowledge through repetition on later lessons. Eventually students will be at an "intermediate" level of CAD skill; knowing what features are available, how to use them, and how to troubleshoot their own models. Students will be able to work on their own designs, work for a company at an internship or early career design job, and be capable of producing models and detail drawings suitable for prototyping or manufacturing. At this skill level students will not be exposed to complex equation driven modeling, simulations, mechanisms, or detailed geometric tolerance drawings.
