A farm revolution and its changing ideals

Animal Farm begins with the animals’ revolt against Mr. Jones and their attempt to organize life around the Seven Commandments of Animalism. As pigs Snowball and Napoleon lead the new order, the novella turns this farm upheaval into a satire of political power, explicitly framed in the source as a critique of Stalinist-era Russia. Its central tension lies in the gap between the animals’ founding principles and the increasingly human character of their rule. The allegorical setting gives Orwell a compact way to examine how revolutions and political ideals can change under those who govern.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in political satire and allegory.
  • Readers exploring fiction about revolutions, leadership, and political power.
  • Readers studying Orwell’s critique of Stalinist-era Russia.
