A past that will not stay buried

Set in Hushpenny Parish, this literary young adult novel links Dawson Grant’s attempt to rebuild his life with the town’s preparations to reopen an abandoned theatre. After arriving at the home of three mysterious Sisters, he struggles to write a play as fragmented memories and buried truths press back into view. The theatre project gives the story a parallel thread: Dawson’s creative block and the unresolved parts of his own history unfold alongside the town’s effort to bring a dormant place back into use. The description frames recovery, memory, and storytelling as closely connected, while leaving the Sisters’ knowledge—and Dawson’s past—to be uncovered.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Teens and young adults interested in literary fiction.
  • Readers drawn to stories involving memory, personal recovery, and creative struggles.
  • Those who enjoy a setting with mysterious figures and a town preparing to reopen an abandoned theatre.

Book overview

When a thunderstorm delivers a broken, wordless Dawson Grant to the porch of three strange Sisters at the edge of Reckless Abandon Swamp, he wants only to disappear from a world that has quietly betrayed him. Under the Sisters' roof, Dawson begins the slow work of rebuilding a life from the wreckage of the one he lost. Hushpenny Parish has a way of drawing buried truths back to the surface. As the town prepares to reopen its long-abandoned theatre, Dawson's new play refuses to be written. All his attempts seem to fail, over and over again. The past he buried will not remain silent. Memories surface in fragments. And the Sisters, who seem to know far more about him than they should, insist that the real story has yet to be told.
