A summer assignment on a coral atoll

Aaron Chase’s internship at a turtle sanctuary in Bora Bora connects an environmental mystery with an introduction to life on the reef. After Aaron and Claire uncover an illegal enterprise threatening sea turtles, they involve Claire’s friend Manu in an effort to stop it. The premise brings together conservation, local Polynesian culture, and the biology of the green sea turtle, while placing friendship and parting alongside the group’s attempt to protect the animals. The setting and environmental subject matter are woven into the adventure rather than presented as separate topics.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

Book overview

After winning an essay competition, 16-year-old Aaron Chase is awarded a summer internship with the Environmental and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) of the U.S. State Department. He soon finds himself on the coral atoll of Bora Bora, on a special assignment assisting at the Turtle Sanctuary there.

Aaron becomes friends with Claire Jeuneaux the daughter of the Chief Ecologist of the sanctuary. When Aaron and Claire discover an illegal enterprise imperiling the lives of sea turtles, they enlist the help of Claire's school friend Manu. The three of them plot to stop it, leading to a deadly situation with their own lives in the balance.

Along the way Aaron learns about atolls and life on the reef, Polynesian culture, and the amazing life of the green sea turtle. He also learns a few things about friendship, and saying good-bye.
