A duchess caught between wealth and control

Paul Boucher’s second volume traces Elizabeth Cavendish’s life from the Restoration era through decades of confinement and contested inheritance. The account connects her unstable domestic circumstances to the legal and social power surrounding her immense fortune, including a secret marriage and prolonged litigation. Jamaica, the fortunes of a powerful husband, and the care of physician Hans Sloane mark key points in a biography that follows Elizabeth’s changing status—from heiress to wealthy widow and, later, a woman officially declared a lunatic. The description ends before completing the account of her final years, but establishes a focus on aristocratic life, mental illness, and the limits of a woman’s control over her own property and circumstances.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in biographies of Stuart-era British aristocracy.

Attended by celebrity doctor Hans Sloane, the " mad" duchess's slow descent into insanity gathers pace, allowing her to be tricked into a secret marriage, which sees her quickly incarcerated by an unscrupulous aristocrat in a wing of his splendid mansion as he battles for control of her colossal inheritance, launching a record-breaking, decades-long litigation. Officially declared a lunatic by Queen Anne, Elizabeth is widowed once again and banished to the outskirts of London, where she lingers in terminal dementia for a further 25 years, outliving her entire
