A photographic journey through Orthodox churches

Andrey Vlasov’s book gathers photographs of 50 Russian Orthodox churches encountered during his travels. Its subject reaches beyond architecture: the accompanying description places churches within the religious, cultural, and everyday life of Russian communities, noting their roles as places of worship and gathering as well as settings for shelter and shared news. Icons, frescoes, white brick walls, and golden domes provide the visual landmarks of this travel-focused presentation. The book offers a compact way to explore church interiors and buildings across different places through photography, framed by the history and social significance attributed to the Russian church since the Christianization of Rus’ in 988.

Book overview

Since the Christianization of Rus' in 988, the church has been playing a significant role in the public, cultural and everyday life of Russian people. The church became a sanctuary of the lifestyle of our ancestors. Visiting the church, they would not only pray to God or take part in the sacraments, but they would also socially network, learn news, find shelter and food, and take aesthetic enjoyment of the architecture and interior decoration. Russian churches are among the most beautiful in the world and more than that they are the reflection of the Russian soul with all the greatness of their icons, frescoes, white brick walls and golden domes.

During my journeys, I visited some Russian orthodox churches in different places of the world. So, in this book, I'd like to show and tell a little bit about them.
