General

General music books cover essential aspects of music as a discipline, introducing readers to its fundamental principles, terminology, and historical context. This subject is ideal if you seek a comprehensive overview, encompassing theory, the development of musical forms, and broad discussions about music's role in society. Unlike more specialized music subfields, general music resources aim for accessibility whether you are pursuing academic study or personal interest.

To navigate this category, consider whether your interests are best served by a wide-ranging survey or by progressing into subjects with a tighter focus, such as music history, performance practices, or analysis of specific genres. General music is the best starting point if you want foundational knowledge before branching out into specialized topics or research areas within the broader music domain.
