A piano-vocal songbook for a Zorro musical set between Spain and colonial California

Built around Robert W. Cabell’s musical retelling of Zorro’s origins, this piano-vocal collection accompanies a story of Diego Vega’s path from a childhood in California to training in Spain and a return to a troubled colonial home. The supplied synopsis frames his transformation into Zorro against a governor’s harsh taxation, destroyed communities, and a call for collective resistance. Spanish courtly heritage, flamenco music, and the traditions of Diego’s Gypsy relatives form key elements of the musical’s setting and identity. The book is positioned as printed music connected to this swashbuckling stage narrative, rather than a prose adaptation of the legend.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Musicians seeking piano-vocal material from a Zorro-themed musical
  • Fans of musical-theatre songbooks with Spanish and flamenco-inflected elements
  • Performers exploring scores tied to heroic resistance narratives

Book overview

The Legend of ZORRO is Born Again! - in "Z - The Musical of Zorro"! A new swashbuckling Latin infused musical that will make your feet dance and your spirits soar. A classic musical for the new century. In "Z - The Musical Of Zorro" a traveling band of Gypsies performers tell the tale of young Diego Vega. He is the grandson of a Spanish Count and Gypsy Princess. Born in California he travels to Spain as a young boy to train under his grandfather, the royal swords master of Spain and learns the arts of stealth and magic from his Gypsy relatives. After the death of his grandfather he returns home to colonial California. But his home is in turmoil. The Royal Governor's demands for exorbitant taxes leave the homeless and hungry. Farms and villages have been torched and burnt to the ground. He is outraged by their plight, and inspired by the impassioned prayers of the beautiful Carlotta, for a leader to unite her people to fight for freedom, Diego vows to become that hero, and dons the mask of Zorro. Castilian blood, flamenco music, and gypsy passion embodied in one young man who challenges a greedy Tyrant. "When your freedom is stolen - sometimes you must steal it back piece by piece - like a thief in the night".
