A critical edition of a medieval Ovid commentary

This scholarly edition presents Wilhelm of Orléans’s *Bursarii super Ovidios*, a commentary written around 1200 on Ovid’s known works. Its approach is selective: instead of explaining every verse, it systematically addresses passages considered difficult, incorporating them into a continuous commentary. The introduction and critical text place the work within Orléans’s role as a major center of Latin poetry study in the 12th and 13th centuries. The edition also brings attention to the commentary’s manuscript transmission and its influence on later medieval Ovid commentary, including the so-called Vulgate commentary.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers of medieval Latin commentary and the reception of classical authors
  • Researchers interested in Ovid’s scholarly tradition and manuscript transmission
  • Readers seeking a critical edition with an introduction

Book overview
