Scottish folklore reframed through queer poetry

Rachel Plummer’s illustrated poetry collection recasts Scottish folktale figures through LGBT themes, including a selkie who moves between boyhood and girlness, a kelpie, a warrior-wife and the Loch Ness monster. Mythic beings and familiar folklore motifs become a setting for poems that explore gender and identity in contemporary life. The collection’s combination of Scottish myth, illustration and poetry gives its retellings a clear folkloric frame while placing queer perspectives at the center.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Teens and young adults interested in poetry with LGBT themes
  • Readers curious about Scottish folklore and myth retellings

Book overview

A boy selkie who takes girlness off like a sealskin, an untameable kelpie, the warrior-wife of a princess, and a Loch Ness monster who is too busy having fun to worry about words like "girl" or "boy". This is the way the world is - with just a bit of Scottish myth and magic thrown in. Wain is a fully-illustrated collection of LGBT themed poetry aimed at teens (but suitable for all ages) based on retellings of Scottish folk tales. These poems immerse readers in an enriching, diverse and enchanting vision of contemporary life.
